Battle Cry Sketches

“Battle Cry” is the war/science fiction comic I made for the first issue of Bloody Pulp Magazine. This story was a melding of two of my current obsessions: WWII and video games.

After working in animation for so long, you get exposed to lots of different art styles and techniques. While working on Golden Age for Augenblick Studios, I discovered the joy of art history (or art swiping) as we delved into past animation techniques and mimicked them using Flash and Wacom tablets. I was then introduced to EC comics by Mike Wartella, a brilliant cartoonist who also worked at Augenblick, and ordered the full reprinting of Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat from Bud Plant. I soon became an admirer of Harvey Kurtzman’s, and swooned in the presence of his original art (and others’) at the “Masters of American Comics” exhibit at the Jewish Museum. I then hit upon the idea of making a magazine that celebrated the old while also making it new and calling it “Bloody Pulp Magazine.” I thought about my two buddies from SVA, Glenn Urieta, who had nursed his awe-inspiring yet unpublished crime comics since we graduated in 1998 but was working in advertising and movie production, and Leigh Walls, a talented comic artist who, instead of becoming the next big thing in superhero comics, had been languishing in a non-arts related job for years, and threw the idea at them. Glenn was a perfect fit since he had that pulp sensibility from watching way too many crime movies and fostering his own inner demons (and plus we had the same combat boots), and Leigh was a fellow science fiction fan who also appreciated the old Masters such as Caniff and Eisner, and who also had a host of his own inner demons (many of which I share). Anyway, everyone agreed it was a great idea, and it was a cool way to get everyone to draw comics again, and afterwards we would meet regularly for months discussing what exactly we wanted to do with Bloody Pulp. I know I speak for the three of us when I say that it’s been one of the most creatively exciting times in my life, and I feel a sense of excitement for comics that I haven’t felt since I first started doing my zine Karass 13 years ago. Sure, Glenn, Leigh, and I have had our disagreements, but we knew in the end we’d have something special. And that something is our baby, Bloody Pulp Magazine, a sweet juicy bit of violent, sexual, fascinating fruit, the first issue of which you will hopefully hold in your hands come Christmas 2007.

damn the default setting, i’m posting something!!! so this being my first entry to this blog i imagine i should have something to say… but i don’t. not really. it’s thanksgiving week and things are ramping up in regards to BPM. we got our proof for the first issue over the weekend and leigh, mike and i have seen it and are very pleased with the result (barring a few minor changes). jeremy has only seen digital pics and he’s enthusiastic about what he’s seen so that’s good too. so even though we’re pretty distracted with either catching planes to somewhere or just getting the opportunity to sleep in this week, there’s a palpable anxiety about having something that we actually love doing seeing the light of day. and of course in the grand scheme of things it’s not much… not really. but like the default setting… DAMN THE GRAND SCHEME… i hope who ever makes it over here and reads this rambling nonsense can appreciate the enthusiasm behind this modest project. i don’t know about the other fellas, but i’ll be posting a progression of some of the art that went into making the cover and maybe some sketches. go check out the ubiquitous myspace page at: www.myspace.com/bloodypulpmagazine apart from that if you’ve stumbled across this or were directed here by one of the others or yours truly then CHEERS, you silly funny book supporting goof! much thanks for your presence… now get off my lawn. -glenn
